Greek government to double natural gas subsidies in April

The government’s natural gas bill subsidy for households and businesses will double in April from subsidies in March, the Department of Energy said Tuesday. The subsidy will amount to 40 euros per thermal MWh from 20 euros a month earlier.

Environment and Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas reportedly sent a letter to natural gas suppliers to inform them of the government’s decision.

The beneficiaries of the subsidy are all household consumers, numbering approximately 540,000 people, for their total monthly consumption, as well as all commercial and industrial consumers, regardless of their size, turnover and number of employees, with the exception of electricity producers.

Measures to support natural gas consumers in April, including the DEPA discount, will amount to 88.74 million euros from 63 million euros in April.

Double the subsidy for households in April, when most private consumers turned off heating, after March 26 at the latest, due to better weather conditions and higher temperatures? Not to mention the fact that some of us turned off the gas heating in early January and were freezing through the cold months after we received our gas bill for December.

I cannot but agree with the position of SYRIZA: “[Премьер-министр Кириакос] Mitsotakis, having allowed citizens to freeze for six months and pay a second heating rent, now that the weather is getting warmer and heating demand is decreasing, is touting that it is doubling its natural gas subsidy in April,” the SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance said in a statement. Tuesday.

“Mitsotakis should not then be surprised at the people’s anger. He not only mocks, he is a political impostor,” the statement said.
