Dendias visited Odessa and handed over humanitarian cargo to doctors

On April 3, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias visited Odessa. He handed over the humanitarian cargo to the doctors and met with the head of the Odesa OVA Maxim Marchenko.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias, at a meeting with the head of the Odessa Regional Military Directorate, Colonel Maxim Marchenko (Odessa, 04/03/2022), made statement:

“Thank you very much for accepting me during these difficult times. I came here to reaffirm the support of the Greek government, the government of Prime Minister Mitsotakis and emphasize our close relationship with Odessa, with its past, and allow me to express hope for its future.

Because today, even through the smoke of bombs, it is safe to say that Odessa has a bright future. All I can say right now, in these difficult times, is that we will be part of that future, helping you rebuild this city and make it even more beautiful, even better.

Let me say in conclusion that I was very touched. I visited the building of the Friendship Society, where the Greek Revolution began, and found it just as I left it in July. All items are kept and guarded in the basement. So thank you very much. We greatly appreciate the fact that you have protected our common heritage. I can only hope for the best for you during these difficult times.”

The head of the Greek Foreign Ministry met with the mayor of Odessa, Gennady Trukhanov. Dendias announced this on his Twitter page.

“I met with the mayor of Odessa, Gennady Trukhanov. We discussed the strong presence of the Greek community in the city in the context of historical Hellenistic ties with Odessa and the challenges it faces,” Dendias wrote.

In the same place in Odessa, Mr. Dendias announced the resumption of work of the consulate of the Hellenic Republic in Odessa.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece quotes minister’s statement:

Greece is present in Odessa. I am here today representing the Greek government, the government of Mitsotakis, but I also believe that the entire Greek society should send help here, first of all, to Odessa. Humanitarian assistance to the Greek community, as well as to the entire population of the city.

From today, the Greek Consulate is open again. And I’d like to thank the consul, Mr. Dohtzis, and his deputies for their duty and the way they do it. The work of the consulate will help in the distribution of humanitarian aid and the creation of evacuation corridors for the Greek community, if necessary, from anywhere in Ukraine through Odessa. And it will emphasize our historical presence in this city”.

Recall that earlier Nikos Dendias stated, what he wants accompany a humanitarian mission to Mariupol.
