Mariupol: “hope dies last”

There is still hope for a mass evacuation of residents of Mariupol to Zaporozhye. Although only 3 thousand of its inhabitants managed to leave the ruined city yesterday.

Buses of the International Committee of the Red Cross arrive in Zaporozhye. Its passengers are those who were lucky enough to be evacuated from Mariupol. A mass evacuation of civilians was planned for Friday, but heavy street fighting is going on in the city, and it failed. Evan Watson, head of the ICRC press office, said the humanitarian organization planned to lead a column from 54 buses. The next attempt is today, Saturday.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that they had opened an additional humanitarian corridor towards Zaporozhye at the request of the leaders of France and Germany. In one day they managed to use only three thousand people. And at least 100-160 thousand people want to leave Mariupol.

Meanwhile, Turkey, according to the publication “News”, is ready to help with the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol. This was stated today by the head of the Turkish Ministry of Defense Hulusi Akar. The Turkish edition of Sol Haber quotes him:

“We can provide ship support in the evacuation of civilians and the wounded from the sea in Mariupol.”

Ankara is coordinating its actions with Russian and Ukrainian structures in this matter. According to the Anadolu publication, the Russian military attache of the Russian Embassy in Turkey has already been informed about the proposal.
