Viral load in wastewater increased by 41%

Last week, the viral load in wastewater increased by 41%, said Nikos Tomaidis, professor of analytical chemistry at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He warned that the peak is expected next week.

The delta strain of the Covid-19 virus in Greece has completely disappeared, and at the moment the Omicron 2 variant, which is more contagious but with mild symptoms, prevails.

Speaking on Wednesday Skai TVTomaidis, who is in charge of wastewater analysis, said the viral load increased by 41% in the past week, with an additional 10% increase seen in recent days.

He stated that the viral load will continue to be high in the next period, with a peak expected next week. This will be followed by a slow de-escalation.

The scientist explained that it is no longer possible to calculate the actual cases of infection, which corresponds to the viral load of wastewater, since many infected people do not know that they are sick.

Tomaidis added that the Omicron 2 strain dominates 77% and is highly contagious, with mild symptoms in vaccinated people.

As for the dangerous Delta strain, according to the professor, it has completely disappeared.

Number of new infections in Greece rose again in the last couple of days and surpassed 10,000 cases in the capital Athens for two consecutive days.
