Russia "behind"Georgia "against"and South Ossetia?

Anatoly Bibilov, President of South Ossetia, announced a possible referendum on the republic’s accession to the Russian Federation.

He noted that the country intends to become part of Russia as a subject, and then initiate the procedure for unification with North Ossetia. At the same time, he called the unification necessary.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia called the statements about the referendum in South Ossetia and its discussion unacceptable, it will not have any legal force. Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani said in an interview with reporters today:

“Of course, talk about holding a referendum [в Южной Осетии] are unacceptable in those conditions when the territory of Georgia is occupied. This occupation has not only a political, but also a legal assessment.”

Earlier, Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, said that Russia had not taken any legal action related to the possible holding of a referendum in South Ossetia on the issue of joining Russia. However, he stressed that the Kremlin respects the expression of the opinion of the people of the republic, writes “News”. Sergei Menyailo, head of North Ossetia, stressed in his commentary on the possible holding of a referendum:

“Political decisions changed the contours of administrative or state borders, but they never affected the relations between North and South Ossetians. The desire of the Ossetians is to be a single whole, a single family.”

Bibilov said that in the very near future South Ossetia would take legal steps to become part of Russia. He recalled that in 2014 the republic missed this opportunity and “cannot allow this to happen again.” According to him, unification with Russia is a strategic goal and the way of the republic. He did not fail to note that for upholding freedom and recognizing the independence of South Ossetia, its citizens will always be grateful to the leadership and people of Russia.

As Viktor Vodolatsky, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots, noted, the referendum could take place as early as May-June. And Senator Andrey Klimov pointed out that the laws of the Russian Federation provide for a special procedure for the admission of the state to the country: for this, the people of South Ossetia need to express their will through a referendum. He indicated that Moscow is waiting for these procedures to be completed.

Dina Gassiyeva, the press secretary of the head of the republic, said that most likely the referendum will take place after the presidential elections in South Ossetia, scheduled for April 10. All legal procedures for joining the Russian Federation will be completed after the elections.

In addition to the Russian Federation, the independence of South Ossetia is recognized by Venezuela, Nauru, Nicaragua and Syria.
