European COVID certificate: new rules adopted by the Commission

Under new rules approved by the Commission, the validity of vaccination certificates for 270 days (9 months) after the first series of vaccinations will no longer apply to minors.

According to news4health.gr, on Tuesday the Commission approved new rules regarding the digital vaccination certificate under the regulation EU regarding COVID. They allow minors to dispense with the presentation of certificates (which no longer have an “expiration date”). In this way the limitation of the standard period of validity of the certificate will only apply to persons aged 18 and over. Although a booster dose has been approved by the EMA for persons 12 years of age or older, not all Member States currently recommend a third dose for children.

Commissioner of Justice Mr. Didier Renders stated on this occasion:

“One of the biggest advantages of digital COVID in the EU is its flexibility to adapt to new conditions. After discussions with Member State public health experts, we have decided that vaccination certificates for minors must not expire. “When they travel can continue to use the certificate they received after the first series of vaccinations“, writes dikaiologitika.gr.

Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Ms Stella Kyriakidou added: “The pandemic is still ongoing and vaccination remains vital. Our message has not changed: get vaccinated and then booster as soon as possible. It saves lives and is critical for all of us.”

The implementation of the new provision for persons under 18 years of age will be implemented through the adaptation of an application for mobile devices used to verify digital EU COVID certificates. Member States must make the necessary technical changes by April 6, 2022.
