The longest road tunnel in Greece

One of the most dangerous stretches of road in Greece has become one of the safest highways in Europe.

This is the A1 motorway, which connects the Greek south with the north and Athens with Thessaloniki. Much of the responsibility for the safety that the A1 offers to drivers is borne by the T2 Tempi Tunnel, which has nearly halved the time it takes to traverse this difficult stretch of road.

The Tempi Tunnel is up to 6 km long and is the largest in Greece. Its construction began in 2008 and was suspended three years later for financial reasons. Work on its completion resumed in 2014, and the opening took place in early April 2017, writes carandmotor.gr.

The official name of the double tunnel is “Marinos Antipas-Riga Feraio” and each branch has two traffic lanes (plus a LEA of 2.5 meters), making the total width of the roadbed 3.75 meters. Each branch also has a half-meter wide lane on the left and a sidewalk at least one meter wide. The maximum height for vehicles is five meters.

Tempi 1 (T1) and Tempi 3 (T3) tunnels are also located in this area, with T1 and T2 bypassing the valley of the same name. The total length of all three road tunnels reaches 11 km.
