Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking at yesterday’s press conference in Brussels following the NATO and EUsaid that the European Union had reached an agreement on the energy issue:
“The lengthy summit of the European Union has just ended, and today there was a rather difficult discussion on the big problem of energy. It ended, fortunately, successfully, with a general agreement on the text. The European Commission has promised to submit proposals by May on the purchase of electricity in Europe and on how to correct distortions in the extremely high price of natural gas.”
The Greek premier noted that discussions on energy issues were rather complicated, as there were different opinions on how to respond to the explosive growth in natural gas prices. But the parties were able to reach an agreement, and the European Commission was instructed to study the market, talk with all the players and work out the most efficient and effective solution. Such, for example, may be the upper bracket for gas prices.
Mitsotakis said no one expected gas prices to soar so high. Encouragement and satisfaction among the participants of the summit was caused by the news that a long-term gas supply by the US and LNG producers was being discussed.
Mitsotakis stressed that the sanctions against Russia have been tough and are already having consequences for the country’s economy. The importance lies in the fact that they are carried out by everyone, including all NATO members, notes GreekReporter.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Ukrainians held an anti-war rally in Brussels, not far from the building of the EU Council, where EU leaders discussed the Russian invasion of their country and new sanctions against Moscow.
The demonstrators lay down on the ground in memory of their compatriots who died over the past month. Activists called on the European Union and NATO to give Ukraine more weapons to repel Russian aggression, writes euronews.
