Cyber attack on ΕΛΤΑ: some services will be unavailable today

In Greek post offices ΕΛΤΑ on March 22, some services will become unavailable due to a hacker attack on information systems.

Postal branches will not be able to provide financial services, accept payment of bills. However, the cyber attack did not affect ELTA Courier, so the service will continue to operate as usual, including the delivery of letters and parcels.

Restoration work of information systems continues around the clock to ensure their security. In the announcement, ΕΛΤΑ reported, quoted newsbeast.gr:

“In the context of constantly and responsibly informing the public and its customers, Ελληνικά Ταχυδρομεία informs that competent ΙΤ-services, in partnership with ΙΤ-security specialists, work on a 24-hour basis for the complete restoration of information systems and their safe operation.

It was determined that a targeted cyber attack aimed at encrypting systems critical to the functioning of the mail service was initiated by malware installed on a workstation and using the https reverse shell method to connect to a computer system controlled by a group of cybercriminals.

To solve a technically complex problem, more than 2,500 terminal systems are checked in turn for IT security, while agent programs are installed. The main primary goal is to immediately resume the operation of the commercial IT system, protect all data and normalize the work of post offices as soon as possible.

Today, Tuesday, March 22, the delivery of mail and parcels will be carried out by ELTA Courier as usual, this incident is not related to its activities. But accounts and financial services in branches will not be serviced. The Postal Service asks the public and its customers for their understanding of the inconvenience resulting from a targeted malicious attack by cybercriminals and will responsibly report on the progress of the issue.”
