Coronavirus: alarm over the number of hospitalized babies

The Omicron mutation in relation to the Delta strain turned out to be more dangerous for babies, experts say.

According to a study by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Κέντρων Ελέγχου και Πρόληψης Ασθενειών, CDC), the number of children under 4 years of age treated for Covid-19 strain Omicron was five times higher than when the United States was dominated by the Delta variant of the coronavirus. , writes in.gr.

fivefold number

From December 19, 2021 to February 19, 2022, when the Omicron variant predominated, the weekly incidence of Covid-19-related childhood illness peaked at 14.5 per 100,000 children under 4 years of age. That number was nearly five times higher than the Delta variant (June to December 2021), according to a 14-state study.

Selectivity

Also of note is the disproportionate number of hospitalizations of Hispanic and African American infants (27.5% and 23.1%, respectively) during the Omicron wave.

According to experts who spoke with the New York Times, the phenomenon is largely due to the poverty and large families in which many of these children grow up.
