Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said today that Russia and Ukraine are moving closer to an agreement on “critical” issues, adding that they are close to agreeing on some of them.
Mevlut Cavusoglu said in an interview with a newspaper Hurriyetwhat he hopes is that a ceasefire will be declared if the parties do not reverse the progress they have made towards reaching an agreement.
“The positions of the two sides coincide on important and critical issues. In particular, we see that they almost completely coincide on the first four points [соглашения]. Some issues need to be resolved at the level of presidents,” the head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry believes. At the same time, he did not specify on what topics the positions of Moscow and Kyiv coincide, quotes Turkish Minister of TASS.
Formerly The New York Times reportedthat the United States offered Turkey to supply Russia with S-400 missile systems in exchange for the possibility of Ankara returning to the F-35 fighter program.
“The United States quietly presented Turkey with a proposal to transfer to Ukraine the S-400 anti-aircraft systems acquired from the Russian Federation for use against Russian aircraft,” wrote journalist David Senger on Twitter. But Turkey, they say, again refused such a “tempting” offer.
The author of an article in the WSJ called symbolic a possible situation in which Russian planes over Ukraine would be shot down by Russian missiles. Kolb cites Peskov, who called the S-400 systems defensive, not offensive, which, from his point of view, makes it impossible for Russian President Vladimir Putin to complain about such a move.
