The earthquake hit the northeast coast of Japan, shortly before midnight local time, at 23:36. The source was located in the Pacific Ocean, near the island of Honshu, in the area of Fukushima Prefecture, at a depth of 57 km.

The Shinkansen high-speed train derailed between Fukushima and Shiroishizao, no one was injured in the accident. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said authorities would remain vigilant for the next 48 to 72 hours due to the possibility of another major tremor.
