In Greece, the number of refugees from Ukraine exceeded 8,000 people


As of March 13, more than 7,142 refugees from Ukraine arrived in Greece, of which 2,289 are minors, the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum said in a statement.

Considering that between 400 and 900 refugees arrive in Greece every day, their number exceeded 8,000 at the time of publication. In total, on March 13, because of the war, Ukraine more than 2.8 million people left and their number is already approaching 3 million.

Municipality of Piraeus provided housing for 25 refugees from Ukraine

These are women, children and the elderly, to whom the municipality of Piraeus will provide, for at least one month and for as long as they require, housing, food and medical care, according to City Hall message.

The mayor of Piraeus, Yiannis Moralis, stressed the following in a statement:

“Today we received 25 Ukrainian refugees, who are accommodated in a hotel and in the KAPI city hall, providing food and medical care. These are our brothers who have experienced dramatic situations due to the war, and we want to offer them to stay in our city in the best conditions in order to feel safe.Piraeus is always at the forefront in times of crisis, showing in practice its solidarity and human face, and it will continue to do so.As the municipality of Piraeus, we will continue to take initiatives for social and humanitarian purposes, always taking into account difficult times that the people of Ukraine are going through.

The mayor of Piraeus, Yiannis Moralis, from the very beginning of hostilities, announced his intention to accept refugees from Ukraine, especially from the sister city of Odessa, if necessary, by sending a letter to the Ukrainian ambassador to Greece, Sergei Sutenko.

At the same time, the mayor’s office, together with CODEP, continues to collect essential items that will be sent to Ukrainians (collection point: CODEP warehouse, El. Venizelou street, 27 Piraeus).

The first refugees from Ukraine, consisting of 9 women and children, arrived in Ioannina from Thessaloniki on Sunday night, Epiruspost reports. They were housed at the Epirus Welfare Center in the city of Ioannina.

This structure has several rooms that can be used without disturbing its functionality, which is mainly aimed at hospitality and the protection of children. The President of the Center for Social Welfare, Maria Tsolaki, and all the staff of the unit had previously made the necessary preparations for the reception of the first refugees who arrived in Ioannina and from Odessa.

At the same time, according to confirmed information, the Konitsa Protection Center is being prepared, capable of receiving more than 100 refugees. In the past, it functioned as a refugee structure, when it was one of the first in Epirus to host families from Syria. Now he is again ready to receive people who lost their homes and their homeland due to the war.

As we reported earlier, the Greek authorities announced about priority right to receive asylum for citizens of Ukraine.

Provision of temporary protection (asylum)

Within 90 days the asylum service of the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum will provide you temporary protection for 1 (one) year with the right to access legal employment, medical and pharmaceutical services, in accordance with Directive 2001/55 of the Council of the European Union.
