Greek farmers offered housing and work to Ukrainians

The Tihoro district of the Soufli municipality (which is in the north-east of Greece) offers housing and work to citizens of Ukraine, according to the state TV channel ERT.

Due to the fact that last year a pilot project was already launched with 30 citizens of Ukraine, whose work and general behavior suited the farmers of this region very much, it was decided to repeat the invitation this year as well.

According to the statement of ERT Orestiada, head of the Agricultural Corporate Partnership of Thrace Thanassis Maltepiotis, in the end of February – early March, recruitment was to begin in Mariupol, where, in cooperation with the consulates of Odessa, Mariupol and the embassy, ​​1,000 people were selected to work in the asparagus crops in the region, with the possibility of employment on stone fruit cultures of Imathia. But the war stopped this initiative.

Now the plans of local producers are adapting to new data, and through the state plan they accept refugee citizens from Ukraine.

The municipality of Soufli, according to Vice Mayor Dimitris Darousis, in cooperation with the Agricultural Association of Thrace and after appropriate consultations, in the context, primarily humanitarian, offers accommodation for 300 to 350 citizens from Ukraine in houses, mansions and rooms for rent in each settlement , reports the news department of the Municipality of Souffli. At the same time, Ukrainian refugees will be able to live and work in such a way that they feel safe.

Next Monday, the local authorities are preparing the arrival of the first group of refugees from the Hospitality Center (refugee camp) in Promahonas, where, after registration, they will be distributed throughout the country.

The municipality of Souffli was ready to contribute to any process for the resettlement of these people. As indicated, they will be able to work from March in Evros on asparagus crops and continue to work in Imathia with stone fruits in the fields and factories until November.

In addition, citizens of Ukraine will have the possibility of an annual visa with the possibility of extending for three years, until they decide what to do. The prefecture of Evros, according to Mr. Maltepiotis, is in dire need of at least 1,500 workers, while for the entire region of Macedonia – Thrace, this figure exceeds 5,000-6,000 people.
