ELSTAT: Mortality in Greece increased by 32.44% in the first 5 weeks of 2022

According to ELSTAT, in 2022, the death rate in Greece increased by 32.44%, i.e. 4190 people died.

In the first 5 weeks of 2022 (01/03/2022 – 02/06/2022), 17,106 people (8534 men and 8572 women) died. For the corresponding period of 2021 (01/04/2021 – 02/07/2021), 12,916 deaths were registered (6596 men and 6320 women), informs the publication iefimerida.gr.

An increase of 3100 deaths (22.13%) was recorded compared to the average for the first 5 weeks of the six-year period 2016-2021. (14,006 deaths). Percent change per year for the period 2016-2021 are -9.68% in 2021 compared to 2020 (14,301), -2.07% in 2020 compared to 2019 (14,603), 16.97% in 2019 by compared to 2018 (12,484), up -24.58% in 2018 compared to 2017 (16,553) and up 25.62% in 2017 compared to 2016.

Most of the deaths were recorded in the 5th week of 2022, according to ELSTAT.

According to the statistical service, the largest number of deaths was recorded on the 5th (01/31/2022-02/06/2022), 4th (01/24/2022-01/30/2022) and 2nd weeks (10/02/2022). 01/01/2022- 01/16/2022) with growth rates of 42.2%, 40% and 35%, respectively.

It is observed that in each age group, mortality was higher in absolute terms, mainly in the age groups over 90 years (1114 deaths), from 85 to 89 years (1100), from 75 to 79 years (571) and from 80 to 84 years (477), while the lower rate was mainly in the 10 to 14 age group (4 deaths).

In the regions of permanent residence of the dead, an increase in mortality is observed in all 13 regions of the country. The largest increase in absolute terms is in the regions of Attica, Central Macedonia and Western Greece: 1473, 620 and 418 deaths respectively.
