Six people were arrested by the Internal Affairs Service (ΥΕΥΣΑ) on charges of illegally issuing driver’s licenses to interested persons, with a tariff of up to 2,200 euros.
Three of those arrested are employees of the department of transport and communications of the regional department, three others are owners of driving schools. At the same time, five more owners of driving schools appear in the case file, writes newsbreak.gr.
According to the study, members of the criminal group, since at least November 2021, have been issuing illegal driver’s licenses of all categories, certificates of professional competence (driving categories) and other certificates (licenses) issued by Επαγγελματικής κατάρτισης Μεταφορέων.
During the test, district examiners helped candidates succeed in one of the following ways:
- replaced the questionnaires with others that were previously answered in a driving school,
- when passing written exams, they themselves ticked the boxes where it was necessary (in case the candidates did not know the answer to the question),
- prompted candidates for the answers they had to choose as correct,
- provided the subjects with sheets of paper on which the correct answers to the questions were written.
For the issuance of a category C driver’s license and a certificate of professional competence, criminals received from 1,900 to 2,200 euros, and for the issuance of a category B driver’s license – at least 1,600 euros. Part of the money was intended for employees of the Directorate of Transport and Communications.
The investigation found that in at least 133 cases, members of the criminal organization assisted candidates in passing the theory exam.
According to ΥΕΥΣΑ, candidates from other prefectures, in order to take advantage of the illegal activities of the criminal organization and obtain a driver’s license, changed their place of residence on false admission documents, for which they paid an amount of 50 euros.
During the coordinated Greek police operations, members of the group were arrestedand during the investigation were discovered and confiscated: 2825 euros, 2 examination forms for a driver candidate, a stamp (seal), as well as a number of handwritten and printed documents, and a cheat sheet with “correct answers”.
The detainees were individually prosecuted for a criminal organization, bribery and repeated bribery of employees, giving false testimony, forgery, incitement to give false testimony, as well as violation of official duties.
