US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland confirmed that there are biological research facilities in Ukraine, and they are working to ensure that they do not fall into the hands of Russia.
“There are biological research facilities in Ukraine that, in fact, we are very concerned about right now … Russian troops may be seeking to gain control over them. We are working with the Ukrainians to prevent any of these research materials from falling into the hands of Russian forces if they get close,” Nuland said, speaking before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
It is worth noting that literally recently the Greek fact-checker ellinikahoaxes.gr published material in which Anthony Papatanassiou “exposed” Russian propaganda, saying that “there is no evidence that there are American laboratories” bioweapons “in Ukraine.” The agreement between the United States and Ukraine, signed in 2005, provided for cooperation between the two countries not in the production of biological weapons, but in research, prevention and containment of biological threats”.
“As stated in treaty“, the authors of the publication report, “signed in Kyiv on August 29, 2005 between the US Department of Defense and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the agreement provides, among other things, preventing the spread of technology, pathogens and know-howhow. They are located at facilities in Ukraine and can be used to develop biological weapons (Article 1(2).
In addition, it provides for joint biological research, detection and timely response to biological threatsimproving the protection of biological materials, as well as control and accounting to reduce the risk of theft or unauthorized use of dangerous pathogens (Article 3, paragraph 2).
Finally, the treaty clearly states that, in order to ensure the joint efforts of the two countries to prevent dangerous pathogens and minimize threats, any pathogens will be jointly be investigated both in research laboratories in Ukraine and in US laboratories – for prevention, protection or other peaceful purposes (Article 4 (5)).”
