Weather: snow in Attica, where a harsh winter will come in the next few hours

According to the latest forecast from meteorologist Kostas Laguvardos, winter will again hit the country with harsh weather and snow in several areas at once, including Attica.

The beginning of the week will mark a strong bad weather, reports protothema.gr. At the same time, since early morning today, March 8, it has been raining mainly in the north of the country, snowfall in the mountains and foothills, and a storm has been recorded in the northeastern part of the Aegean Sea. The invasion of a cold atmospheric front begins in the country actually from Wednesday, when there will be a further drop in temperature.

According to forecast data from the National Observatory of Athens/Meteo.gr, the weather will be unstable, with weather phenomena in the north gradually becoming localized (with the exception of Western Macedonia). Rain and local thunderstorms are expected in the west, in the center and on the islands of the Aegean Sea. Snowfall is expected in the mountains and foothills of central and northern Greece, as well as in areas of Macedonia and Thrace (at low altitudes).

Gradually from noon today, snowfall is expected in the regions of Epirus, Western Macedonia, Thessaly (in the lowlands). From night to Wednesday morning in the Central part of mainland Greece, snowfalls are expected, even at low altitudes, in some places heavy.

Storms will occur on the islands of the eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese, North Crete and the Ionian Sea, and hail is possible in places on the islands of the eastern Aegean and Ionian Seas.

Heavy snow has been falling since the early morning of Tuesday March 8 in the mountains and foothills of Thessaloniki. The snow-white landscape creates a magical setting. From early morning, according to the local media, thestival.gr, it has been snowing in Hortiati, Filiro, Avestochori, Oreokastro, Melissochori, Arethousa, Xylopoli, Lagina, Pefka, Drimo, Dorkada, Monolofos and in the mountainous areas of Dimos. Snow will mainly affect the central-eastern countries – down to -14°C is expected in Florina.

Meteorologist Clearchos Marousakis said the weather will be unstable in the next few hours, but a cold invasion is expected from Wednesday. A polar atmospheric front is descending from Russia and Ukraine, the air temperature will drop significantly, and in the coming days even in the north of Attica there will be a heavy snowfall (in the early hours of Thursday 10/03).

“The predicted snowfall in Attica will upset those who are waiting for snowdrifts on Syntagma. Only in the northern suburbs of Athens will there be light precipitation. However, it is noted that the cold will be severe and prolonged, with heavy snow falling in some areas of the rest of Greece. In a word, early we hung our fur coats and coats in the closets, “until next winter.”
