Approximately 20 thousand volunteers from different countries want to fight on the side of the Ukrainians, protecting their country from the Russian invasion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the end of February announced the creation of an “international legion” of foreign volunteers. The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine said yesterday that already 20,000 citizens, mostly from European countries, have expressed a desire to join it. Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba told CNN:
“Currently, their number is about 20,000 people, mostly from European countries. When people saw that the Ukrainians were fighting, that they were not giving up, it pushed them to fight.”
Kuleba noted Ukraine’s need for those who know how to fight and are ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with the defenders of the country. However, he stressed that it is “more important” for Ukraine to receive “political, economic and military assistance” from the rest of the world, and especially “for its air defense.”
Volunteers who are ready to take part in the war in Ukraine are offered to contact Ukrainian embassies in the countries where they are located. Denmark, for example, has already given its citizens a “green light” to join this “legion”, as has Liz Truss, the British Foreign Secretary.
However, Tony Radakin, the British chief of staff, said yesterday that it was “illegal and useless” for the British to start a war in Ukraine. newsbeast.gr.
