Tourist season 2022 in Greece – will events in Ukraine affect it

How will the war in Ukraine affect the tourism industry in Greece? She now takes a wait-and-see attitude, preparing to deal with any problems that arise.

While there are no cancellations, reports ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ Alexandros Vasilikos, President of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels

“Obviously, the situation in Ukraine scares anyone, as it happens in any difficult situation.”

ΞΕΕ is watching developments, and Mr. Vasilikos reveals three obvious factors that industry experts are paying attention to, writes newsbeast.gr.

Rising energy prices that could cause a crisis in the industry

A huge problem for hotels in Greece is the increase in operating costs for electricity. Mr. Vasilikos comments on the price spike:

“Whatever happens in Ukraine, Greece and the hospitality industry is already paying for it and will continue to pay in the future.”

However, he believes that this will not affect the competitiveness of the country’s tourism product, since this is a European issue that worries everyone.

Exclusive contracts with Russian tour operators

The current conflict will certainly affect any tourist flows planned by Russia and Ukraine for this year. At the same time, the President of the Hotel Chamber notes that in recent years, flows from Russia and Ukraine are small:

“Even in the best years, the number of visitors from Russia to Greece did not reach 1 million. With the fall of the Turkish lira, it was predictable that Russians would go to Turkey this year.”

But the problem exists for some hoteliers who have exclusive contracts with the Russians. However, Mr. Vasilikos emphasizes, they will have time to restructure the markets they will be directed to in order to attract customers.

Problems with the tourist flow from the USA

The impact of the crisis on Greece will be significant if it affects the US market. According to Mr. Vasilikos, the conflict may also affect other markets. He suggests that Americans are unlikely to travel to Europe this year if unexpected events occur:

“Because they do not have a clear idea of the geographical distance between Greece and Ukraine.”

Such a development of the situation can “harm”. Greece received about 1.2 billion euros from inbound tourism from the United States in 2019 (6.7% of the total). U.S. receipts in the first nine months of 2021 accounted for 47% of corresponding receipts in the first nine months of 2019. This year, a new direct flight is launched from the US, as part of Delta’s new summer program, landing at Eleftherios Venizelos on March 7th.

“Small and Medium Households” to cancel vacations this year

Nikos Chalkiadakis, president of the Heraklion Hotel Owners Association of Crete, which has been a standout in the past with increased influx from Russia, expressed his concerns through APE-MPE about the economic impact of the current crisis on European households. He believes that they, due to rising energy prices, will affect the vacation readiness of middle-class European households. He says:

“The time we go into regularity will show the evolution of the season. The fact that it is now February is positive as we have until May for a full recovery.”
