There are fewer democracies in the world

Deutsche Welle draws attention to recent research data showing the sad results of political transformation – there are fewer and fewer democracies in the world. The publication writes:

“For the first time since 2004, the BTI index showed that there are more authoritarians than democratic developing countries in the world.”

Democracy is far from having the best of times, yielding the “palm” to authoritarianism. The BTI (transformation index), which analyzes the processes of transition to democracy and market economy in comparison with other countries and determines successful strategies for peaceful change, for the first time since 2004 showed the predominance of authoritarian states over democratic ones.

The BTI, compiled annually by the Bertelsmann Foundation, for 2021 shows that of the 137 developing and transition countries surveyed, only 67 are democratic. The number of autocracies rose to 70. Hauke Hartmann, head of the BTI project at the Bertelsmann Foundation, notes:

“This is the worst result of political transformation that we have ever seen in 15 years of our work.”

According to the results of the study, there are significantly fewer transparent and independent elections, freedom of opinion and assembly around the world.
