Ithaca “dressed in white” – bulldozers were used to clean the roads

A heavy hailstorm hit Ithaca on Tuesday afternoon, February 22nd. The rainfall caused serious problems on the island.

The phenomenon was so intense that the mayor of Ithaca, Dionysis Stanicas, said: “In order to be able to clean the streets, heavy equipment had to be used. We treated the situation as if it had snowed. It didn’t stop for 45 minutes. In many places, its layer exceeded 40 cm.

Due to bad weather, traffic was paralyzed. The public utilities got a lot of work, so to clear the roads from the dense hail cover, the municipal government brought bulldozers and excavators to the streets.

The storm lasted just under an hour, but led to the flooding of many basements and basements of houses and shops. The storm also knocked down many trees.

According to Mr. Stanicas, many houses were flooded due to clogged gutters. Big problems were also recorded on the road network and in agricultural production, the newspaper reports. iefimerida.gr.
