At yesterday’s press conference after meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Russian President Vladimir Putin explained about the borders of the DPR and LPR recognized by Russia:
“To what extent will we recognize these republics? We have recognized them, which means that we have recognized all their fundamental documents, including the constitution. And the constitution says: the borders within the Donetsk and Lugansk regions at the time when they were part of Ukraine.
But we expect, I want to emphasize this, that all controversial issues will be resolved in the course of negotiations between the current Kiev authorities and the leadership of these republics. Unfortunately, at this point in time, we understand that this is not possible, since hostilities are still ongoing there and, moreover, they tend to escalate, but I hope this will be the case in the future.”
Regarding the borders of the “DPR” and “LPR”, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that the issue of establishing their borders would still be decided. Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Andrey Rudenko said that Russia recognized the territories within the boundaries in which the authorities of the republics actually exercise powers and jurisdiction.
The President of the Russian Federation also stated, as he writes New Newspaperthat the Minsk Agreements no longer exist:
“Minsk agreements were killed long before yesterday’s recognition of the people’s republics of Donbass. And not by us, not by representatives of these republics, but by the current Kiev authorities.”
Putin assured that Russia would provide military assistance to the self-proclaimed republics:
“Of course, we signed agreements, and these agreements with both the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic contain relevant clauses that say that we will provide these republics with appropriate, including military, assistance.”
Earlier, the Federation Council allowed Putin to use the Russian armed forces abroad, which allows him to send troops to the “LPR” and “DPR”.
