The Greek branches of Greenpeace and WWF, as well as a number of marine life protection organizations, sounded the alarm when three whales ran aground on the island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea. The incident occurred in recent days and coincides with the work of the seismic survey vessel SW Cook in the area.
Fifteen environmental organizations are calling for an end to ongoing seismic surveys aimed at finding oil and natural gas in the area, as they directly link them to the disorientation of marine mammals, warning of massive damage to marine life.

The Ionian Sea has been home to the Zyphios whales for thousands of years. Marine life protection organizations are concerned that more and more mammals are stranded and possibly dying unnoticed.
On Wednesday, Greenpeace members began a protest on the NGO Rainbow Warrior vessel off the island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea.

The first two whales, Ziphius cavirostris, washed up in the shallow waters of Arillas and Agios Gordios northwest and southwest of Corfu on Sunday, and the third a day later in Agios Gordios.
Volunteers and rescuers from a marine life protection NGO, as well as local residents who spotted the mammal, helped them return to the depths of the sea.
The Ministry of Environment and Energy was also mobilized, and specialized veterinarians from the Hellenic Center for the Rescue and Care of Marine Mammals “Arion” and the Marine Protection Institute “Archipelago” went to the site to examine the animals and take blood samples for laboratory analysis.
Did everything end well? Definitely not. The whales were “clinically healthy”, but why were they stranded? The whales had similar symptoms and were severely disoriented. Marine protection NGOs blame seismic surveys in the area and intense underwater noise caused by the Navy’s sonar frequencies.
According to a statement released by ” Archipelagos»:
“It is by no means a coincidence that on the same day two whales were sighted off the coast of Corfu at a short distance (approximately 25 km)” near the site where active seismic surveys by the SW Cook have been conducted since early February.
Based on international experience with numerous stranded whale cases, it is generally accepted that the main threat to Ziphius cavirostris is intense underwater noise, either from certain frequencies of naval sonar or from strong “sound bursts” caused by seismic surveys.
This sudden and violent noise pollution causes Ziphius cavirostris to emerge abruptly from deep waters, causing them to experience symptoms similar to those seen in divers, often resulting in their death.
On the day the whales ran aground, SW Cook followed the northern route from Kefalonia to Corfu and then made a 180-degree turn in the center of Corfu, close to the area where the whales landed.
Throughout this journey and to this day – a day later (February 21) – the ship maintains a constant speed of 4 miles, so it continuously continues loud sonic explosions.
At the same time, a second seismic vessel, the Norwegian Geo Barents, also sailed in international waters off Corfu, off the coast of Albania to southern Italy, but it is not yet known if it used its seismographic equipment and in what areas,” the NGO noted.
