Prices on the market ahead of the Meat Eater

The Meat Eater (Tsiknopemti), a traditional Greek holiday, is approaching, which this year takes place on Thursday (24/2). According to experts, this year it will be celebrated in better conditions than in previous years.

For the first time, Tsiknopemti will begin to resemble the pre-pandemic years, as last year, due to the nationwide quarantine caused by the covid pandemic, the movement of citizens was allowed through a mandatory text message sent to 13033.

At Varvakeio Agora, the historic market of Athens, there is always a buzz on the eve of the holiday. Butchers are hoping for an increase in turnover, while industry professionals told iefimerida.gr that despite the global wave of revaluations, the market is trying to keep prices down.

How much will the meat cost

On the eve of Tsiknopemti, Varvakeo provided the first information about the “price list” to the site iefimerida.gr Ms. Afanasia Tsironi. As she says, “Today there is not much movement here, so far it is quiet. From tomorrow we expect the first wave of buyers. Prices are basically at the level of last year.”

According to Ms. Cironi, the price of beef has risen compared to last year and amounts to 6-8 euros per kilogram, while other meat products have remained almost at the same level. Approximately: pork chops from 3.90 euros per kilogram, chicken from 2.90 euros per kilogram, lambs and kids from 6-7 euros per kilogram, while prices in local stores vary significantly.

What to look for when shopping

Industry traders said consumers should be especially careful when shopping on Ash Wednesday. As they emphasize, high prices for products should be avoided, since scammers are “on the alert”. You should be wary of both too high and too low prices for the product you have chosen. Experts advise to walk around the market, ask the price, and only then make a purchase.

Restaurants are expected to be busier after the lockdown is eased, but large groups of people will also gather in homes, as is traditionally done to enjoy the day.
