The diplomat noted that the EU has prepared different packages of sanctions for different scenarios.
According to the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, the already agreed package of sanctions against Russia will be brought up for discussion if Moscow recognizes the independence of Donetsk and Lugansk.
At the same time, the EU countries have not yet agreed on what kind of restrictions will be introduced, Bloomberg sources said.
One of the interlocutors of the agency said that the EU usually responds to violations of international legal order with severe penalties. At the same time, another source claims that there is still no consensus in the bloc about what Moscow’s actions, other than a full-fledged invasion, will lead to sanctions.
Earlier, an extraordinary meeting of the Russian Security Council was held, at which Vladimir Putin and other members of the council discussed a possible decision to recognize the independence of the self-proclaimed republics. Interviewed members of the Security Council supported such a decision.
Earlier, the heads of the self-proclaimed republics Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik addressed the Russian leader with such a request to recognize independence. The reason for this appeal was the aggravation of the situation in the Donbass.
