Canakkale 1915 bridge connected Europe and Asia

Turkey has completed the construction of the 4608-meter Canakkale 1915 bridge, which connected the shores of the Dardanelles between Asia and Europe.

The total cost of building a bridge over the Dardanelles and the Malkara-Canakkale motorway amounted to more than 2.5 billion euros, reports Agency Anadolu. On Saturday, an inspection walk along the bridge, ready for opening, was made by Adil Karaismailoglu, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey. He noted:

“Over the past decades, the Turkish authorities have successfully implemented a number of mega projects, such as the Marmaray and Eurasia tunnels under the Bosphorus, Istanbul Airport, Yavuz Sultan Selim and Osmangazi suspension bridges … A week later, on February 26, 2022, the bridge across the Dardanelles will also be handed over to the Turkish people for use . The cost of the construction of the Malkara-Canakkale highway and the Canakkale 1915 bridge amounted to 2 billion 545 million euros.”

Recall that Turkey managed to defend its independence and maintain control over the Dardanelles and the Bosporus in 1915. Then on March 18, during the battle of Canakkale, the Turkish army defeated the combined Anglo-French fleet, which was trying to break through to Istanbul. This event became decisive. In this regard, the minister said:

“I am glad of my stay on the Canakkale peninsula, where in 1915 the whole world witnessed the epic heroism of the Turkish people. The participants in that battle proved that the Canakkale (Dardanelles) strait was insurmountable for the enemies of Turkey. But when it comes to friendship, brotherhood, trade, tourism and prosperity, the Dardanelles can be comfortably crossed by car in just 6 minutes.”
