On Tuesday, the Greek Foreign Ministry summoned Ukrainian Ambassador to Athens Serhiy Shutenko, where he was informed about a serious incident that occurred in the village of Granitnoye in eastern Ukraine – the death of one and the injury of 2 more Greek expatriates.

“The Greek side, in addition to the deepest sadness caused by this incident, emphasized its particular concern and the need to protect the Greeks of the diaspora, which has suffered from the 8-year-long conflict in southeastern Ukraine. The Ambassador of Ukraine expressed sincere condolences to the families of the victims, noting that there was no political or ethnic motive and that the incident was a criminal offence.

The police detained two men. Material evidence, including weapons, was confiscated from them. On the fact of the incident, criminal proceedings have been launched under the articles: premeditated murder of two or more persons, attempted premeditated murder, hooliganism.

The locality where the murder took place is in Ukrainian-controlled territory, 62 km from Mariupol, which has a large Greek community. Investigative actions are carried out under the leadership of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for the Military and Defense Spheres of the Joint Forces.

Cafe employees and visitors, in turn, tried to calm the drunken military and made some remarks to them, which led to a verbal skirmish and conflict.After that, the soldiers left the cafe.
