The emotional appeal of “The Smile of a Child”: “He could have been saved”

Because of the brutal murder of a 7-year-old child in Kypseli, Smile of a Child denounces the system and appeals to the entire Greek society.

It is terrible that in the hands of monsters, a 29-year-old mother and her 33-year-old partner, there were two small children. Only the girl was saved. This is unforgivable and indicates the imperfection of the system:

“Although many actions have been taken to protect children, it appears that the system has not responded and failed….”

Recall the bones of the murdered man in Kypseli seven year old Andreas were for five years in a toolbox found by the police on the balcony of the apartment where his mother, an immigrant from Poland, lived. The boy constantly endured the bullying of his mother’s 33-year-old roommate, an alcoholic and drug addict, until one day it all ended in tragedy.

Later, the man admitted during interrogation that on that fateful day he once again punished the little son of his cohabitant, depriving him of food and forcing him to stand in one place for several hours. In response to the boy’s protests, he wrapped the nose and mouth of the child with electrical tape, as a result of which he died as a martyr from suffocation.

“Smile of a Child” has been actively involved in the fate of this family for many years. As a result of numerous actions, the organization managed to save the sister of the victim, but this in no way justifies the loss of her younger brother. The organization’s acquaintance with the troubled family began back in 2008, when the mother of the murdered Andreas, Christina-Claudia, was a minor. She was 15 at the time and pregnant. The kid that his mother will betray after 7 years…

“Child’s Smile” performed a number of activities in relation to a dysfunctional family. According to official data:

On September 10, 2008, Child’s Smile carried out an intervention at the place of residence of a minor Cristina-Claudia (the mother of the murdered child), then she was 15 years old. The on-site inspection took place on the basis of a complaint received by the organization. In addition, according to the person who called SOS 1056, the minor was pregnant. On May 16, 2018, Smile of a Child sent a statement to the juvenile prosecutor’s office that Christina-Claudia’s daughter was being physically abused and neglected. The girl turned out to be the sister of the murdered child, as the complaint concerned their common mother. On May 17, 2018, the next day, the director of the school where the sister of the murdered child studied called the 1056 emergency line and immediately informed the police that the child had come to school with bruises. By order of the prosecutor, the girl, along with her mother, was taken to the hospital, and the volunteers of the organization constantly assisted her. However, the mother denied that her partner had abused the baby. On May 21, 2018, the pedagogical community provided psychological assistance to the child in connection with the incident when she came to school with bruises. On June 27, 2018, Smile of a Child received a request to host a minor. The sister of the murdered child is now in a foster family. From the conducted child psychiatric examination, it follows that the child found dead has been living with his father in Poland since November 2016.

However, inevitable questions arise:

the sister of the murdered child was saved, but what actions were taken to support the other child? even though many actions have been taken to protect the children, it seems that the system has not given full support to the family, and today we are faced with the murder of another child.

Could it have been saved…
