Powerful earthquake in Georgia, 6.2 on the Richter scale

On Sunday evening, February 13, tremors shook the south of Georgia. Their strength was felt by the residents of Tbilisi, Batumi and other regions.

Seismic vibrations of magnitude 6.2 on the Richter scale occurred at 22:25 local time. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the village of Sameba, in southern Georgia, not far from the border with Armenia. The strength of underground disturbances was felt in Tbilisi and Batumi, residents of the Georgian capital took to the streets. No casualties or damage have yet been reported.

Earlier, the Center for Seismic Monitoring at the University of Elijah estimated the magnitude of underground vibrations at 5.8 on the Richter scale, but then changed the indicator, the Center’s website reported an estimate of 6.2 points.

The mayor of the Dmanisi municipality, Koba Muradashvili, where the earthquake occurred, said: “Nothing happened here. Everything is peaceful and calm here. Our municipality was the epicenter, but there were no destructions, and there were no victims.” He noted that after the earthquake in the municipality, the electricity went out, but now the power supply has been restored.

After the first shock in the same area, with an epicenter in the village of Sameba, two more earthquakes occurred: a magnitude of 4.5 points in three minutes and a magnitude of 4.1 points in 10 minutes.

In addition to Tbilisi and Batumi, tremors were also felt in other regions of the country. Currently, mobile communications and the Internet are working smoothly, according to TASS with reference to Mtavari Arxi TV channel.
