Free Wi-Fi in the Zografou area

Another municipality in Attica, the Zografou district, has begun installing a Wi-Fi network.

Residents of Zografou and its guests will now have free and unlimited internet access as the municipal government has used the European Union’s WiFi4EU program.

At the first stage, the installation took place in ten locations in six selected areas of the city:

Πλατεία Βάσκα. Πλατεία Αλεξανδρή (2 access points). Πλατεία Άνοιξης. Πλατεία Τερζάκη. Πλατεία Αγίου Γερασίμου. Πάρκο Γουδή (4 access points, 4 access points).

“Our goal is to enable as many citizens as possible to freely use the Internet, saving time and money,” the mayor of the district, Vassilis Todas, said in a statement. “The Municipality of Zografu will continue to use all available tools and programs to provide better access to digital media for citizens.”

As Russian Athens wrote earlier, the transformation of the capital into a modern convenient and modernized city, in which residents like to live and work, is one of the main priorities of the municipality of Athens.

Over the past two years, the authorities have developed a series of innovations, creating new digital infrastructure and services that make everyday life easier for citizens. The Municipality of Athens has already created 118 easy-to-use digital services focused on the needs of the population and businesses. Thousands of citizens now receive certificates and documents in a few “clicks” of the computer mouse, thus avoiding visits to authorities, avoiding queues and crowds.

A few weeks ago, the Municipality of Athens took another important digital step, allowing residents and visitors of the capital to enjoy free internet access services in 11 parts of the city.

Free Wi-Fi networks are located in busy areas of the city so that as many citizens as possible can access digital services, saving time and money.

Already in the first two months of operation, the program provided free Internet to more than 100,000 users, with almost 300,000 unique connections established.

The points where citizens are provided with free wireless network are as follows: Syntagma Square, Lycabettus, Heroes’ Square (Psirri Square), Kotzia Square, Serafio of the Municipality of Athens, Central Library of the Municipality of Athens (Domoku 2), Cultural Center (Akadimias 50), Liosion 22, Karamanou Square, 1st Cemetery of Athens and KEP (Victoria Square).

Free connection to the wireless network of the Municipality of Athens is easy and fast
Access to the network is free and open to everyone, no personal information is required when entering the network and using it. The WiFi4EU network is implemented using isolation technology that isolates the device from other network users for maximum security.

Everyone can connect to the network in two simple steps:

Step 1. Citizens find a list of Wi-Fi networks on their mobile devices and select the “WiFi4EU” network (if they are in one of the geographic areas that offer free internet connection).

Step 2: Once the Athens Municipality portal login page appears on the screen, they click on “Login” and automatically access the internet for the next 12 hours.

After this time, it is enough to repeat the process.

“This initiative marks the beginning of a new era in which citizen-centric free services are expanding into the digital space. Our goal is to expand the program to 129 neighborhoods in Athens so that every citizen and every visitor to the city has the opportunity to use the Internet, wherever he is. Athens has entered a new digital age dynamically and the municipality, through Computer Development Development, will continue to create conditions that will make everyday life easier and more functional,” emphasizes Athens Mayor Kostas Bakogiannis.

In order to increase equal opportunities for every citizen to access the Internet, as well as to become better acquainted with new technologies, services and applications, the Municipality of Athens plans to gradually expand the free Wi-Fi program in all areas of the city.
