Unbelievable: Handcuffed and walking prisoners are escorted through the city center

Handcuffed detainees are taken to their destination on foot, right among the passers-by in the center of Alexandroupolis, from the coast guard office to the police headquarters, since the port authority does not have places of detention.

The arrest of four people by the Alexandroupolis Coast Guard has again brought to the fore the egregious phenomenon reported by the city’s residents.

According to evros-news.gr, since the Port Authority does not have detention centers, it sends those arrested to the Alexandroupoli Police Department, where they are held until the preliminary investigation is completed and brought to justice. In fact, some need to go back to the Port Authority for further action or clarification.

The escort was carried out on foot, and the detainees crossed a large part of the center of Alexandroupolis, following the route shown on the map below, without being transported by Coast Guard vehicle, as it should be.

People in handcuffs could be seen by all passers-by, including small children. And apart from the security issues raised, the very fact that the detainees are being led among ordinary citizens, as if nothing had happened (regardless of whether they are proven guilty or not), is shocking.

The authorities’ excuse that it is “relatively close” cannot be accepted because, as already pointed out, the port authorities and the detainees cross the city’s most central point.
