New LNG terminal to open in Greece in 2023

On Sunday, the project operator Gastrade SA announced the construction of a floating terminal for receiving liquefied natural gas in Alexandroupolis, Greece.

Its capacity will be 5.5 billion cubic meters. m per year, the terminal should start operating at the end of 2023. The final investment decision has been made, the terminal’s capacity is already half contracted, Gastrade SA reports on January 30. The received gas will be distributed to the markets of Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine, Serbia, North Macedonia.

Greece already has one DESFA LNG terminal, Revithoussa LNG, 45 km from Athens. In the past 2021, it received 2.4 billion cubic meters. m of gas. The project for the construction of a new one received state support in the amount of 167 million euros.

The co-owners of Gastrade SA are Elmina Kopelousa, GasLog (owns and operates LNG carriers), Bulgarian Bulgartransgaz, Greek DEPA and DESFA.

As our publication reported, Europe is trying to compensate for the lack of gas LNG supplies from USA. More than 20 tankers are already on the way, 33 more are ready for shipment.
