The first blow to the Russian supermarkets Mere in Greece

The Russian supermarket chain Mere in Lagadas (Thessaloniki), after less than seven months, is now moving to another location with an unknown start date.

One of the Russian trading companies has set its sights on the Greek retail market. We are talking about the Russian company “Torgservis” (Torgservis). The Russian “super-discounter” intends to open its first branches in Greece soon.

Major supermarket chain Mere is relocating to an unspecified area after a grocery sale and store closure in Lagadas. As expected, consumers were waiting with interest for the “interesting offers” of the Russian company, promising big discounts on goods and prices, up to 30-80% lower than in the rest of the market.

Mere, or Svetofor (as it is known in Russia), is the largest discount chain in Russia with 1,200 stores across the country. According to a RetailAnalysis report, Svetofor found and filled a gap in the Russian market with a discount format. A subsidiary of Torgservis opened in Russia in 2009.

After arriving in Greece and equipping the salesrooms, it turned out that the stores had a good appearance, spacious warehouses with a large number of pallets, minimal or no labels and price tags printed on … sheets of A4 paper. This particular store (in Lagadas) was the fourth after those in Larissa, Tripoli and Corinth. The Russian supermarket Mere began its work on June 30, 2021.

One of the Russian trading companies has set its sights on the Greek retail market. We are talking about the Russian company “Torgservis” (Torgservis). The Russian “super-discounter” intends to open its first branches in Greece soon.

According to the Greek edition news247.gr, citing Fnb Daily, the Russian food chain Mere plans to expand its activities in Greece after it “conquers” its Balkan neighbor Serbia. Mere is a subsidiary of the Russian group Torgservice, founded in 2009 and currently operating in more than 800 locations throughout Russia under the name “Svetofor”. This is the third largest chain of stores after X5 and Magnit.

“To date, we have opened 1,500 discount stores and operate in 10 countries. The time has come to expand our activities in the Serbian market with no less than 100 stores with a total sales area of about 1,000 square meters,” the office of the Russian company in Serbia stressed.

As already mentioned, Torgservice intends to work directly with manufacturers, with strict quality control and low cost. As indicated, prices in stores will be 20% lower than average and will be able to compete with large Greek supermarket chains – Σκλαβενίτης, Βασιλόπουλος, Lidl, My Market. Under the slogan “Every day only the cheapest prices” and “Σε λίγο καιρό μαζί σας” (Soon with you), Russian entrepreneurs intend to win back, if possible, a serious piece of the retail market in Greece.

It is known that Torgservis stores are successful not only in the cities of Russia’s periphery, but also in two capitals. According to data reported by Torgservice, its annual turnover is currently 1.5 billion euros. The discounter opened 1200 store branches across the country and expanded to the markets of Germany, Poland, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, China. An analogue of the Russian supermarket chain in Greece is Lidl.

Mere’s interest in the Greek market and its possible presence in the country is confirmed by the search for suitable stores in all cities of Greece with a population of more than 25,000 inhabitants and in tourist places. The search for Greek suppliers and premises for retail space is currently underway.
