Sotheby’s put up for auction a rare black diamond weighing 555.55 carats

The huge diamond was named “Enigma” because it is assumed that it was formed as a result of a meteorite falling to Earth. It has 55 facets and weighs 555.55 carats.

This miracle is literally from another planet. We are talking about a colossal black diamond of 555.55 carats, which the international auction house Sotheby’s plans to sell for at least $6.8 million.

The rare diamond is called “Enigma” (mystery) because it is believed to have been formed as a result of a meteorite falling to Earth. It is considered the largest of its kind, being registered in the Guinness Book of Records.

In general, black diamonds, also known as Carbonado diamonds, are extremely rare, ranging in age from 2.6 to 3.8 billion years, and contain traces of nitrogen, hydrogen, and osbornite, elements found in meteorites. It does, however, stand out for its natural versatile shape and size.

Commenting on Enigma, Nikita Bitani, the House’s jewelry expert, called it a “real natural phenomenon”, and its sale is a unique opportunity in life to acquire a rare cosmic miracle.

Its shape is inspired by the Middle Eastern Hamsa palm symbol, a sign of protection meaning “five” in Arabic. The “five” theme governs the whole stone, which, in addition to 555.55 carats, contains exactly 55 facets.

In the past, black diamonds have sold for over $13,600 per carat. Accordingly, Enigma’s price is expected to exceed $6.8 million based on the interest shown.

Submission of applications will be held from 3 to 9 February. It is noted that Sotheby’s announced for the first time that it would accept payment in cryptocurrencies!
