Negotiations between Lavrov and Blinken in Geneva ended without much results

The meeting between US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Geneva began with little hope of success.

As a matter of fact, this was stated even before the talks, where Russia’s proposals on security guarantees were to be discussed, and both the Russian and the American sides declared that they did not expect a breakthrough.

Earlier, three meetings were held on the subject: negotiations between interdepartmental delegations of the Russian Federation and the United States in Geneva on January 10, discussions within NATO in Brussels on January 12, and discussions in the OSCE, which took place in Vienna on January 13. As a result of the latest, the Russian permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Alexander Lukashevich, said that Russia does not intend to discuss its proposals in the OSCE, since this organization “does not have an international legal status and is not capable in its current state of influencing the situation in any way in the OSCE.” Euro-Atlantic”.

On December 17, 2021, the Russian Foreign Ministry published drafts of a treaty with the United States on security guarantees, as well as agreements on measures to ensure the security of Russia and the member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Russian-American consultations on these issues were held on January 10 in Geneva, on January 12 a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council was held in Brussels, and on January 13 these initiatives were discussed at a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna.

After that, the United States began to sharply escalate the situation, with daily statements about Russia’s attack on Ukraine. It reached the point of absurdity when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a statementthat, according to his information, Russia attacked back in .

It is expected that the heads of diplomatic departments will hold separate press conferences following the results of the meeting this year, and there is no point in panicking.
