The Ministry of Culture canceled the decision to finance the Delos Museum after the case of gang rape

The Ministry of Culture has announced plans to reverse the decision to accept a donation from a private foundation that recently became the subject of controversy following a high-profile gang rape case in the northern port city of Thessaloniki.

The donation was directed to the reconstruction of the museum on the island of Delos. The decision to reject an International Foundation of Greece (IFG) grant for a new museum and other works at the archaeological site of Delos was announced on Tuesday evening. reported kathimerini and other local media.

The decision of the Ministry of Culture followed the reaction that one of the main suspects accused of gang rape of a 24-year-old woman at a New Year’s party at a hotel in Thessaloniki, is a board member of IFG and the family that founded it.

The ministry’s decision also came in response to a statement from the opposition party SYRIZA, which indicated that any links between the suspect and efforts to renew Delos “would lead to significant developments to which the Minister of Culture must respond.” SYRIZA MP Sia Anagnostopoulou stated that the ministry should cancel the decision to accept sponsorship and stop any cooperation with the specified fund until the circumstances are clarified.

Delos, an island in the Aegean, was the spiritual center of the ancient Greek world and one of the country’s most important archaeological sites.

The reversal of the Dec. 31 decision by the Ministry of Culture to accept the IFG donation will be officially published in the Government Gazette, the statement said.

It should be noted that before the decision of the Ministry of Culture to cancel funding, it is workers union The ministry called on Minister Lina Mendoni to cancel the funding. According to the union, the IFG foundation was established in 2014 with the main goal of funding a new museum on Delos.

Last February, the Minister of Culture found herself in an extremely difficult situation when the artistic director of the National Theater Dimitris Lignadis was arrested for rape and has since been in jail awaiting trial.
