Germany wants to jail anti-vaxxers

The fight against vaccine opponents is intensifying against the backdrop of the rapid spread of the omicron strain, says NG: “The level of infection with the omicron variant in Germany has reached the scale of a national disaster.”

The Robert Koch Institute yesterday reported more than 80,000 infections in 24 hours, the highest number since the start of the pandemic. In a week, an average of 500 people per 100,000 inhabitants become infected. About 8 million have already been ill with coronavirus in the country.

3 million Germans in the 60+ age group remain unvaccinated. Scientists warn that it is among the unvaccinated and infected that more and more new mutations of the virus are being discovered. And the current “omicron” cannot be considered the last in this regard. German virologists believe that only three vaccinations reduce the risk of human-to-human transmission of the virus.

Referring to the opinion of experts, Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach noted that he is a supporter of the introduction of mandatory vaccination for all residents of Germany. The measures that have been taken so far have served to reduce the burden on the healthcare system so that doctors can provide timely assistance to those who are ill, including other diseases.

Media in Germany note the failure of the goal set by the federal government to cover 80% of the country’s population with the first vaccination. Although currently approximately 700,000 people visit vaccination centers every day to get vaccinated. In Berlin, the premises of the Berlin Fair have been set aside for these purposes, and units of the Bundeswehr have been sent to help doctors.

Draconian measures are in force in the country: a ban on visiting any establishments and establishments – restaurants, cafes, theaters, cinemas – without two vaccinations. The exception is pharmacies and supermarkets. Yet vaccination rates are not increasing. Chancellor Olaf Scholz is openly discussing imposing fines for unvaccinated people, and some members of the ruling party are proposing prison terms for anti-vaxxers.
