Greek prosecutor’s office opens case against Athos anti-vaxur monks

The Prosecutor’s Office of Thessaloniki has opened a criminal case against the monks of Mount Athos, who oppose vaccinations against coronavirus, reports the publication “Vima Orthodoxy”.

The intervention of the prosecutor’s office of Thessaloniki was caused by the statements of Athos hieromonk Joseph, who reported about monks urging Christians not to be vaccinated.

According to the hieromonk, “these monks who go out and confess killed a lot of people,” as they “advise people not to get vaccinated and claim that the coronavirus is just a flu.”

Based on these allegations, the head of the Prosecutor’s Office of Thessaloniki called for an investigation to identify the anti-vaccination monks and determine whether their actions constituted a crime.

It should be noted that in the course of the investigation, the applicant, i.e. Hieromonk Joseph, will be asked to name specific individuals and indicate when and what they said in order to open a criminal investigation against them.

Interview of St. Joseph to George Theoharis

As we reported earlier, the inhabitants of the Athos monastic republic, not very willing accepted the call of the authorities and the Kinot of the Holy Mountain for vaccination, and most of the monks categorically rejected the idea forced vaccination.

The editors do not have the latest data on the number of vaccinated, but according to a month ago, no more than 1/5 of the monks were vaccinated. At the same time, half of the monks by December 2021 had been ill with the coronavirus.

Unlike Athos, the leadership of the Greek Church strictly demands from its clergy vaccinate, and colleagues from Cypriot Church went further, forbidding unvaccinated priests to conduct services.
