Coronavirus: new graves are being dug in cemeteries in Thessaloniki

The municipality of Oreokastro decided in advance to prepare new graves in the cemeteries of the area as the situation got out of control. The death toll is on the rise, the pandemic in Greece is spreading rapidly and dozens of people die every day.

According to ThessToday.gr, in December last year, the authorities of Oreokastro, by decision of the municipal council, dug 50 graves in the public cemetery, where those who died from COVID19 are buried.

However, since the decree requires that victims of the coronavirus be buried exclusively in isolated areas of cemeteries, away from other graves, and due to the fact that almost 95% of the places were already filled, it was decided to dig 50 additional ones, according to ThessToday.gr, citing to the words of Dimitris Karasavvidis, Deputy Mayor of Administrative and Financial Services of Oreokastro Municipality.

“The decision to expand the boundaries of the cemetery will be made in the coming days at a meeting of the municipal council. It’s not that we don’t have grave places in cemeteries. But it’s always better to have more than fewer. Although, God forbid, these graves will not be needed for a long time, ”the official added.
