The largest city tunnel to be built in Athens

The construction of new major road network projects is gradually being implemented, thanks to the efforts of the government. Among other things, it is planned to build the largest city tunnel.

According to the website carandmotor.gr, Greece is entering the next development cycle with new government projects and infrastructure that will give a new impetus to the country’s economy. In this context, new highways come to the fore and change the roadmap of Greece.

Among them are new roads to be built in Attica that will take on a dominant role with the ultimate goal of relieving an already existing network that is showing signs of congestion.

From the beginning of next year, all Attiki Odos extensions are launched, which will radically change the current state of affairs. First of all, this concerns the connection of Kimis Avenue (Λεωφόρου Κύμης) with Ethnic Odos (Εθνική Οδό) at the height of Likovrisi. According to the project, this will be achieved through the creation of the largest urban tunnels ever built with a length of 2.1 km (the total length of the section will be 3.8 km). This project with a budget of 370 million euros, which will serve more than 30,000 vehicles daily and will help unload the highway, reduce the number of congestions that are observed daily at the Metamorphosis intersection during rush hours. The information says about an ultra-modern tunnel built according to new European standards.

In the Attica Basin, road work doesn’t end there. Another tunnel is planned to be built from Ilioupoli to Vouliagmenis Avenue. It will connect Katehaki and Kareas Avenue with Vouliagmenis Avenue. The path can be completed in just a few minutes.

It should be noted that in the long term, in terms of the modification of the southern sector, in connection with investments in Elliniko park, it is also planned to build a section of an underground highway on Poseidonos Avenue.
