The Russian virologist described the changes after COVID-19 as aging of the body, comparing the processes taking place in it.
Maxim Skulachev, a leading researcher at Moscow State University named after Lomonosov, a molecular biologist and virologist, notes that coronavirus damage to blood vessel cells is similar to those that occur during aging. He named the vessels and their endothelium (the layer of cells lining the inner surface of the vessels) the main target of COVID-19:
“The damage that occurs with coronavirus is comparable to that that occurs with aging. The result is a concept that I am a proponent of, that COVID-19 and aging use the same mechanisms. ”
Earlier, Veronika Skvortsova, head of the Federal Biomedical Agency (FMBA) of Russia, warned of the acceleration of aging due to coronavirus.
