The head of the Kremlin press service, Dmitry Peskov, said that Russia’s plans do not include a reduction in gas prices for Greece.
At the same time, Peskov noted that the Russian Federation provides 40% of Greece’s natural gas needs and has recently increased supplies. But the United States reduced its supplies, providing the Far East at a more favorable gas price.
Dmitry Peskov’s statements were made in an interview with the Greek TV channel Antenna, given on the eve of Vladimir Putin’s meeting with Kyriakos Mitsotakis on December 8. It was shown on Saturday night in Special Report. During the conversation with reporters, the press secretary noted:
“Do you know how many percent of Greece’s natural gas needs are covered by Russia? A little more than 40%. Russia continues to fulfill all its obligations to Greek buyers, and it will continue to do so. We even increased supplies within the framework of existing long-term agreements. Do you know what happened with American suppliers? They cut supplies to Greece by 43% because they started supplying gas to the Far East and the southeastern region, because natural gas is a little more expensive there. “
Peskov speaks of a lack of understanding of Brussels’ actions, because we are talking about “the interdependence of the European Union and Russia in this area, which brings stability and predictability”:
“This is what we are trying to explain to the Europeans, but Brussels – we do not understand why – chose the spot market and renewable energy sources.
In response to a reporter’s question whether Moscow would like to help the Greeks, who were hit hard on their pockets by the rising price of natural gas, Peskov asked:
“Would you like us to supply natural gas for free?”
He explained, quoted TASSthat prices under existing agreements are bound by certain formulas based on the price of oil. And he added about a possible discount:
“No, because these are mutual agreements. This is the topic of bilateral agreements with Gazprom. You simply sign a contract with Gazprom and you continue [получать газ] for a certain period, and if you have a long-term agreement with Gazprom, you will continue to receive natural gas at the projected price. Not at a price that can range from $ 500 to $ 1,100 a night, in which case it will be secured. “
