Athens: Free Wi-Fi in 11 City Areas

Transforming Athens into a modern, comfortable and modernized city where residents enjoy living and working is one of the top priorities for the municipality of Athens.

Over the past two years, the authorities have developed a series of innovations, creating new digital infrastructure and services that make the daily life of citizens easier. The Municipality of Athens has already created 118 easy-to-use digital services targeted at the needs of the public and business. Thousands of citizens now receive certificates and documents in a few “clicks” of the computer mouse, thus avoiding visiting the authorities, avoiding queues and crowds of people.

A few weeks ago, the municipality of Athens took another important digital step, allowing residents and visitors of the capital to enjoy free internet access in 11 parts of the city.

Free Wi-Fi networks are located in busy areas of the city so that as many citizens as possible can access digital services, saving time and money.

In the first two months of its operation, the program provided free Internet to more than 100,000 users, with nearly 300,000 unique connections established.

The points at which citizens are provided with a free wireless network are as follows: Syntagma Square, Lycabettus, Heroes Square (Psirri Square), Kotzia Square, Seraphio of the Municipality of Athens, Central Library of the Municipality of Athens (Domoku 2), Cultural Center (Akadimias, 50), Lyosion 22, Karamanu Square, 1st Athens Cemetery and KEP (Victoria Square).

Free connection to the wireless network of the Municipality of Athens, easy and fast
Access to the network is free and open to everyone, no personal information is required when logging in and using the network. The WiFi4EU network is implemented using isolation technology that isolates our device from other network users for maximum security.

Everyone can connect to the network in two simple steps:

Step 1. Citizens find a list of Wi-Fi networks on their mobile devices and choose the “WiFi4EU” network (if they are located in one of the geographic zones that offer free internet connection).

Step 2: As soon as the login page of the Athens Municipality portal appears on the screen, they click “Login” and automatically access the internet for the next 12 hours.

After this time, it is enough to repeat the process.

“This initiative heralds a new era in which free citizen-focused services are expanding in the digital space. Our goal is to expand the program to 129 districts of Athens, so that every citizen and every visitor of the city can use the Internet, wherever he is. Athens has entered a dynamic new digital age and the municipality, through Computer Development Development, will continue to create an environment that will make the daily life of its citizens simpler and more functional, ”underlines Mayor of Athens Costas Bakogiannis.

In order to increase equal opportunities for every citizen to access the Internet, as well as to get better acquainted with new technologies, services and applications, the Municipality of Athens plans to gradually expand the free Wi-Fi program in all areas of the city.
