Greece: Pfizer vaccines for children 5-11 arrive on December 13

In mid-December, vaccination of children 5-11 years old will start in Greece. The recording platform is slated to open on December 16th.

Vana Papaevangelu, a member of the expert committee and professor of childhood infectious diseases, notes that children with chronic diseases will be vaccinated first.

The first shipment of Pfizer children will be received on December 13th, and on December 16th, as planned, the platform for appointments will be opened to immediately begin vaccination of the younger age group.

In the European Union approved vaccinations for children 5-11 years, recommending Pfizer / BioNTech for this. The dose of the drug for them will be 1/3 of that used in the age group from 12 years old (10 mcg versus 30 mcg).

Children, like adults, will need to be given two doses of Comirnaty (the name of the drug from German and American companies) at 3-week intervals. The injection is given intramuscularly. The EMA Committee notes that a study of the vaccine among children in this age group has confirmed a similar immune system response as when a standard dose was administered at an older age. These include: pain from vaccinations, fatigue, headache, swelling at the injection site, muscle pain, chills. These side effects are usually mild to moderate and will go away within a few days.

Clinical study of the effects of Pfizer vaccine on children over 5 years of age confirms it security… A large vaccination study involving 2,000 children aged 5 to 11 years showed that the immune response to Comirnaty at a dose of 10 mcg was comparable to that observed at the maximum dose (30 mcg) at the age of 16 to 25 years. Effectiveness was estimated at 90.7% in preventing symptomatic COVID-19. The actual figure can range from 67.7% to 98.3%.

In September, given the start of the school year and the opening of schools, the Greek Prime Minister approved vaccinations children over 12 years oldrecommended by experts. It was decided to include private pediatricians in the vaccination process for children. Discussion and adoption of it took place at a meeting of the leadership of the Greek Ministry of Health, pediatricians and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The government hoped that many parents would vaccinate their children even before school began.

Pfizer is now embarking on vaccination research in the 2-5 and 0.5-2 age groups. The results are planned to be obtained by the end of this year. Demands to vaccinate children have increased since the start of the school year in the United States as the Delta mutation caused an increase in cases.
