The 2021 Population and Housing Census is currently under way, which is being conducted by ELSTAT nationwide, starting on October 22nd. As you know, the campaign was extended until December 13.
Through the census, the population of Greece is counted in each regional unit, municipality or community and independent settlement covering the entire territory (mainland Greece, islands, border regions), while collecting data on the demographic and social characteristics of the population and housing conditions.
According to ELSTAT, the campaign is being conducted taking into account the unprecedented conditions associated with the pandemic and based on common methodological principles, rules and specifications, in accordance with the provisions of EU legislation (EC Regulation 763/2008) as well as the law. 4772/2021 (A ’17).
Participation in the population census is compulsory, the collected data are confidential, are not transferred or disclosed to any public or private authorities, and are used only for the production of aggregate statistics. It is noted that no sensitive personal data is collected in the context of the campaign.
The ELSTAT representative leaves a closed anonymous folder in the house that contains the “Unique Inventory Code” of the house. A family member who has received a “Unique Inventory Code” with his TAXIS code can fill out the Census Questionnaire through the digital public sector portal www.gov.gr and enter all his family members.
What applies to those who do not register on their own
Those citizens who, for any reason, cannot register in the electronic system before December 13, will be counted by an ELSTAT representative on their territory (home) during a personal interview.
Individuals living in collective living quarters such as camps, settlements, monasteries, housing for migrants / refugees and unaccompanied minors, reception and identification centers for immigrants / refugees, nursing homes, boarding schools, shelters, etc. are counted (registered) by location (current residence) by an ELSTAT representative during a personal interview.
During their work, about 60,000 ELSTAT representatives carry, in addition to an identity card, a special badge with the ELSTAT mark, where their data, photo and ELSTAT stamp are indicated. Census officials are required to comply with all necessary measures to protect public health from the risk of further spread of covid.
