Unvaccinated priests can be deprived of their salaries

The hierarch of the EOC made an offer to the authorities – to deprive the salaries of priests who refuse to vaccinate.

The publication Orthodoxia.info says that on November 28 such a proposal was put forward by the Metropolitan of Dramsky of the Greek Orthodox Church Paul (Apostolidis). He believes that the funds received in this way can be directed to medical workers “who work day and night, and are strained to prevent death from the stupidity of these priests responsible for sending people to hospitals.”

The Metropolitan is convinced that the spiritual censures now being applied in his diocese, which are applied to clergymen who do not follow the instructions of the church administration, are not enough.

The Metropolitan invites government services to find unvaccinated priests using payrolls. If they do not have medical contraindications for vaccination, they should simply suspend their salary payments. AOJ

Let us remind you that Greek priests receive their salaries from the state. In 2018, for example, the basic salary of an archbishop was 2,600 euros, the metropolitan received 2,210 euros, and bishops – 1,820 euros. There are also additional payments: 45 euros for masters and 75 euros for a doctoral degree.

Ordinary priests with higher education receive 678 euros, which after 10 years of service increases to 1032 euros, and after 30 years – up to 1410 euros. The salary of clergymen after graduation from the seminary is 644 euros, after 30 years of service, it increases to 1099 euros.
