Unaccompanied refugee minors between the ages of 0 and 12 will be included in the Greek adoption and guardianship system in accordance with a memorandum of cooperation signed between Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Domna Mihailidou and UNHCR Representative in Greece Maria Klara Martin, the ministry said on Tuesday.
This collaboration will help meet the special needs of unaccompanied children after placement with a foster family, such as translation and legal support. He will also contribute to the upbringing of these children through information campaigns.
“We want all children to grow up with equal opportunities and rights in a healthy and safe family environment,” said Mihailidou.
There are about 2,100 unaccompanied minors currently living in Greece, Martin said, who also mentioned that the agreement would help ease the potential involvement of refugee and migrant families in caring for these minors.
The ministry did not specify whether these children will be transferred to same-sex families.
