Fourteen unaccompanied migrant children left Greece on Thursday for Portugal, where they will start a new life.
In a post on social networks, the new UNHCR Representative in Greece, Maria Klara Martin, stressed that “thanks to the active work of the special secretariat for the protection of unaccompanied minors, with the resettlement mechanism to the EU for unaccompanied migrant children, the lives of more than a thousand children have changed for the better. ! We hope to continue our cooperation! ”
According to reports, among those sent were one child from Syria, five from Afghanistan, one from Somalia, two from Pakistan, one from Mali, two from Bangladesh and two from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Since the beginning of the resettlement program for unaccompanied children, a total of 1,063 children have been transferred to other EU countries, of which 93% are boys and 7% are girls.
The head of the International Organization for Migration in Greece, Gianluca Rocco, noted that with the help of this mechanism, “the Special Secretariat has created a sustainable national mechanism to support vulnerable children.”
