From today, November 10, a state of emergency came into effect on the border between Lithuania and Belarus, which was announced by the Lithuanian Seim.
The decision was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation with illegal migrants. The regime will operate along the entire length of the border and on the 5-kilometer territory adjacent to it. A state of emergency has also been declared at the registration centers for migrants – in Medininkai, Pabrad, Rukla, Kybartai, Naujininkai. In the territories where the state of emergency has entered into force, any mass gatherings are prohibited, the access system is functioning, migrants are not allowed to use the Internet and electronic communications (the exception is their appeal to official bodies).
A press release of the resolution has been published on the official website of the Seimas. Almost unanimously – 122 “for” and 1 “against” – the legislators voted for the introduction of the state of emergency. Ingrida Simonyte, Prime Minister of Lithuania, noted that restrictive measures are selective and operate depending on the status of migrants, both for those who illegally crossed the border and for those living in the country.
Referring to an unprecedented the situation on the Belarusian-Polish border, yesterday the Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki called for a ban on flights over the EU countries by airlines that deliver migrants to Belarus. He stressed that it was the first time in 30 years that the security and sovereignty of Poland were under such a harsh attack. And the migrant crisis is probably a turning point in Polish history.
Given the current situation, the Polish authorities decided to suspend the work of the Kuznitsa checkpoint. The mobilization of several brigades of the Territorial Defense Forces has been announced. The Polish Ministry of Defense has published a video from the Polish-Belarusian border, where a group of illegal migrants storm the border patrol. They throw stones, bottles and sticks at Polish soldiers through the barrage. The defense department noted that border guards have to deal with such aggression of migrants every day.
